Howard Webb (Honorary)
Howard Webb – Honorary Life Member of Aberdare Referees Society
It is well documented that Howard has a special place in his heart for Aberdare.
His introduction to our society started with an official appointment at Wembley with Aberdare’s former FIFA Assistant Referee Steve Hames in a game between England and Scotland on 26th April 2008.
Following on from a successful appointment and a friendship that was struck up over 9 years ago, ‘H’ now regularly visits Aberdare to pass on his knowledge, experiences and skills to society members.
‘H’ is now considered a ‘local’ as he has been to Aberdare four times (2009, 2011, 2013 and 2015) in the last 8 years and the society continues to support his involvement when he visits.
As part and parcel of visiting Aberdare, our society invites the football fraternity to attend a ‘football and referees night’ to hear the stories ‘H’ has experienced in refereeing throughout the world of football, covering everything from World Cup Final appointments, run ins with former Manchester United manager, Alex Ferguson to training and coaching the match officials of Saudi Arabia’s new professional league as well as being involved with the development of football referees within the English football pyramid system and being in charge of the development of referees in the United States of America.
In total, between 2000 and 2013 ‘H’ has officiated in 534 matches covering domestic, European and international appointments.
‘H’ has publicly stated when he retired from referring saying, “Refereeing has given me so much and I think it’s important that match officials who have had the rewards remain in the game to pass on their knowledge.
Aberdare continues to look forward to ‘H’s’ visits in the foreseeable future.
